On Sunday, Erika Kirk gave a moving and heartfelt speech at the memorial for her late husband, Charlie Kirk. Sadly, Charlie died earlier this month while giving a speech at an event that his group, Turning Point USA, put on at Utah Valley University. More than 60,000 people came to the memorial, including famous people like Donald Trump and JD Vance.
Erika told the New York Times about a powerful memory from when she first saw Charlie’s body after the shooting. She said that his eyes were half-open and that he had a faint, peaceful smile on his face, which made her feel better. Erika said it looked like Charlie died happy and at peace, like “Jesus saved him.”
Erika talked about how shocked and hurt she was when she saw her husband’s injuries during her memorial speech. She said that even though it broke her heart, she still saw the man she loved even after he died. She said that moment was both heartbreaking and a sign of Charlie’s strength and spirit.
Erika also said that a doctor told her that Charlie didn’t feel any pain during the incident. She said the doctor told her that the injury was so bad and sudden that there was no pain or fear. This gave her some comfort in the middle of the tragedy.
She remembered that Charlie had been doing what he loved just before the shooting: debating and speaking passionately on campus. Then, in a flash, he “blinked” and was gone, finding peace in the next life.
Erika Kirk was just named CEO of Turning Point USA. She is now determined to carry on her husband’s work. Her speech and interview show how much she has lost and how much she wants to honor Charlie’s memory.
